Steve & Gayle Barefoot Endowed Scholarship
This endowment is made in memory of Robbie Jones, son of Everette and Gladys Jones of Raleigh, NC and his doctor William Farley, MD. Robbie suffered from kidney disease and eventually failure at the age of 12. His mother gave him a kidney at Medical College of Virginia in 1965. After he rejected that kidney, his father gave him a kidney in 1976 at Duke. He died in 1986. From the age of 3, Robbie was cared for and encouraged by so many wonderful nurses who spent their time and energy helping him adjust and to endure all the hardships he encountered throughout his journey. Some of these nurses became lifelong friends of Robbie and his family. Their support was so meaningful that the family hopes to inspire nurses to give thought about the field of hospital nursing. Pediatric and adult nurses are in critical need here in Wake County. The family hopes that those who apply for these scholarships will think about all the individuals that they will nurse and the impact they can make on an individual. To all nurses who dedicate themselves to this rewarding but difficult career, our family thanks you.
